2009 Season Preview


The Lehigh Valley Catz, coming off a 26-12 record and a Wolff Division Championship in 2008, are set to kick off the 2009 season of Atlantic Collegiate League Baseball this Sunday at the Jersey Pilots, first pitch is 7pm. The home opener is Wednesday June 10th 7pm at Hackett’s Park in Easton. This year’s Catz team, under the direction of new Catz Head Coach Dennis Morgan, will feature a mixture of a returning players, local standouts and talent from all across the country.

Returning to the Catz this year are infielder Steve Gable (Penn – Emmaus High School), centerfielder Austin Newell (Univ. of Texas-Tyler), and pitchers Brian Dudzinski (Brookdale CC), Chris Morrison (Moravian) and Mike Rossetti (Bloomsburg – Phillipsburg HS).

On the mound for the Catz this season....Dudzinski, Morrison and Rossetti went a combined 7-1 in for the Catz in ACBL action last summer. Jeremy Gigliotti (East Stroudsburg Univ. – Pleasant Valley HS) pitched 31.2 consecutive scoreless innings this spring and was named to the 1st or 2nd All-Region teams by 3 different organizations (NCBWA, Daktronics & ABCA). His college teammate C.J. Saveri (East Stroudsburg – Bethlehem Catholic HS) won 5 games with 4 saves for the Warriors. Cory Kent (Lehigh – Wilson HS) was 4-2 with a save as a true freshman. Cory Hawes (Brookdale CC) appeared in 27 games this spring, notching 11 saves, a 1.67 ERA while helping Brookdale advance to the NJCAA World Series. Nick Holtgrieve (Johnson County CC) had 12 saves, allowing only 7 earned runs in 32 innings pitched. Grant Kernaghan (Bloomsburg) was a 2x PSAC player of the week selection this season compiling 5 wins and a team leading 2.81 ERA. Mike Pierce (Penn St.) will be a valuable lefty on Coach Morgan’s pitching staff and Rich Delvecchio (Wagner) is a 6’5” freshman RHP who redshirted this season after transferring from Rutgers.

Behind the plate.....A.J. Miller (Lafayette) started 38 games this spring for the Leopards with 4 Hr’s and 22 RBI’s, Mike Tevlin (Treasure Valley CC) is a left-handed hitting catcher who has signed with Coastal Carolina and Robert Iglesias (Dominican College) hit .342 this spring and was a key contributor for the Chargers who went 22-5 and were the top seed in the NCAA D2 East Regional.

In the infield..........Gable returns for his 3rd summer in Catz Black and Gold and is already among our all-time leaders in hits, doubles and runs scored. Junnior Dishmey (Cisco Junior College) was a 1st team All-Conference selection and ranked amongst the national JUCO leaders in RBI’s and Hits per game. Matt Fenster (Lafayette) hit a solid .273 for the Leopards this spring, Zach Haley (Yavapai) hit .400 this year for the nationally ranked Roughriders, Mike Kacelowicz (Kutztown Univ.) received a “Gold Glove” from Rawlings/ABCA being named 1st team NCAA D2 Atlantic Region defensive team and was a member of the All-Atlantic Region team after hitting .355 and a team best 14 stolen bases. Kevin Mager (Brookdale) hit .411 with 11 HR’s, 41 RBI’s and was named MVP of the NJCAA Region XIX tournament.

In the outfield.....Newell is already 2X ACBL All-Star, he hit .357 this spring and was an American Southwest All-Conference selection as UT-Tyler captured their first ASC championship. Seth Boyd (Wagner) was named 2nd team All-North East Conference after batting .314 with 34 RBI’s this spring, Zach Kirksey (LSU-Eunice) hit .370 with 10 HR’s, 17 stolen bases and 66 RBI’s for the Bengals who were Region 23 Champs and advanced to the NJCAA D2 World Series. Jordan Payne (Yavapai) hit .331 with a team-leading 27 stolen bases helping Yavapai being ranked as high as #2 this season in NJCAA Division 1 baseball.

In 8 seasons, the Lehigh Valley Catz have complied an overall record of 196-109 (.643 winning percentage), captured 3 championships and seen over 40 former players advance on to professional baseball including Drew Sutton (AAA Cincinnati Reds), Casey Rowlett (AAA St. Louis Cardinals), David Welch (AA Brewers) and Casey Lambert (AA Cubs).
