Rockies Preparing to Defend Three-Peat

By: Jason Ogle

The Kutztown Rockies were at in again last season winning their third straight ACBL Championship, the first team to three-peat since the Allentown Wings accomplished the feat in 1978-1980. After finishing the regular season with a 24-15 record, the Rockies defeated Quakertown Blazers 6-1 to setup a Wolff Division Championship Series match up against the Wolff Division Champion Lehigh Valley Catz. The Rockies won both of their games on the road, including a 6-2 series clincher. In the ACBL Championship Game, the Rockies defeated the Hampton Whalers 8-2. After finishing with a 29-16 overall record, the Rockies are now 91-38 (.705 winning %) over their championship run. At the end of last season, the Rockies were ranked 31st in the nation by pgcrosscheckers.com. (http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/summer/2008/summer16/s16_81208.aspx)

Rockies infielder Chris Sedon (Pitt) won the Santy Gallone MVP award after batting .346. He was also the All-Star Game MVP after hitting two home runs in the contest. Rockies pitcher Darin Gorksi (Kutztown) was awarded the Darrin Winston Most Valuable Pitcher award after going 7-0 with a 1.33 ERA in 61 innings pitched. He struck out 78 while walking 15. Other key contributors for the Rockies last season were:

OF John Schultz (Pitt) - Led team in home runs (4) and hits (41)
C Bob Stumpo (West Chester) - Batted .305 with a team-leading 23 RBI
OF Matt Cotellese (West Chester) - Batted .250 with 12 RBI and contributed stellar defense.
OF/INF Matt Young (Mansfield)- Led team with 12 stolen bases and 25 runs scored
P Casey Lawrence (Albright) - 2-1 2.11 ERA 36 K’s in 47 IP

The 2009 edition of the Kutztown Rockies already features some familiar faces. Two Kutztown University pitchers, Adam Maini and Trent Mertz, will be back with the team. Maini spent a majority of last season with two broken feet, but once he returned, he was lights out. He went 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA and earned the win in the ACBL Championship Game. He should be near the top of the rotation this summer. Mertz was 4-1 with a 2.82 ERA and was valuable as both a starter and closer, and should do the same this season.

Infielder Shayne Houck (Kutztown) joins his fellow teammates on the Rockies the summer. Houck is off to a solid start for the Golden Bears thus far in his freshman campaign. Pitchers Tyler Horst (Temple), Jordan Garcia (Mansfield), and Mike Bucklin (Kutztown) have all contributed to their teams early on this season and should add great depth to the Rockies pitching staff. Infielder Joe Russo (Fordham) is capable of playing third, second, or shortstop and is batting .273 in the early going for the Rams. Outfielder Zach Duggan (Pitt) is solid on defense after committing only one error last season and is helping a Panthers team that has scored at least eight runs in three of its first four games. Catcher Andy Drexel (Hartford) batted .291 with 19 RBI for the Hawks last season and should provide stability behind the plate.

As in previous seasons, the 2009 Rockies are looking forward to defending their three-peat and are going to try to make it four straight titles for the maroon and gray.
